A Practical Guide for Better Housing Projects

Airtight Engineering had the opportunity to partner with ECO Canada to develop the Indigenous Housing Toolkit as part of ECO Canada’s Codes Acceleration Program for Indigenous Communities.
The toolkit is designed to support community housing representatives, designers, builders, and trades through the planning and construction of healthier, more durable, and more energy-efficient homes.
While developed through this program, the building science principles and construction strategies in the toolkit are broadly applicable to residential housing projects across Canada.
What’s Included
The toolkit provides practical, accessible guidance on:
Energy-efficient design
Building envelope fundamentals
Ventilation and indoor air quality
Moisture and air barrier detailing
Thermal bridging and insulation strategies
Construction quality control
It also includes worksheets and checklists to help project teams stay aligned from early design through construction.
Why It Matters
Good housing performance goes beyond meeting minimum code requirements. Thoughtful design and construction practices can improve:
Occupant comfort
Indoor air quality
Durability and resilience
Long-term operating costs
Overall building performance
The toolkit focuses on practical strategies that help teams deliver better outcomes while supporting long-lasting, efficient housing.
